NFA Investigates Fatal Fire Incident

The National Fire Authority (NFA) is currently investigating a fire incident which claimed the life of a 42- year old woman in Mulau, Rakiraki last night.

The Rakiraki Fire Station attended the fire incident after they were alerted of the incident at 11.04 pm. Upon arrival at the scene, the fire team found a five-bedroom corrugated iron and timber house fully engulfed in flames. The fire crew managed to extinguish the fire but it was very unfortunate that the body of a woman was found in the house.

The owner of the house (husband of the deceased) and his 13-year-old son managed to escape the fire.

NFA CEO Mr. Puamau Sowane says the National Fire Authority is very saddened by the loss of a life in the fire and greatly sympathizes with the family on their loss.

It is my plea to the people to take extra precautions to avoid such mishaps. It is heart breaking to see such incidents,” he said.

I urge all Fijians to adhere to all fire safety precautions and take them seriously. The current dry and windy weather conditions in the Western Division contribute to the quick spread of fire,” he said.

“We need to be aware of our surroundings and ensure that we do not light fires carelessly. We also need to keep a thorough check on our homes and surroundings for any fire hazards.”

Every life and property matters and everyone has a role to play to ensure that our properties, businesses and homes are fire safe,” he added.

NFA is conducting its investigations to determine the cause of the fire and circumstances surrounding the fire victim.
