Fire Safety Tip For Homes (Cookings, Smokers)

COOKING:

  • Most home fires occur in the kitchen while cooking and are the leading causes of injuries from fire. However, they are often extinguished with only minor damages when a person is generally present.
  • Common causes of fires at night are carelessly cigarettes, sparks from fireplaces without spark screens or glass doors, and hot appliances left too close to furniture or other combustibles.
  • These fires can be particularly dangerous because they may smolder for a long period of time before being discovered by sleeping residents.

ASHTRAYS:

  • Have plenty of deep, large ashtrays or ones with large sides so as cigarettes or pipes cannot fall out.

DISPOSAL OF BUTTS:

  • Don't empty your ashtrays into the kitchen, don't tidy at night - leave them to next morning. Don't empty them into paper rubbish bags or waste paper baskets. They should be left in the ashtray overnight and then emptied into a non combustible bin with a tight lid.

SMOKERS' CHECKS:

  • Check that all butts are cold before emptying ashtrays. Check that all matches are out before disposal. Check under cushions and loose squabs on your furniture before going to bed after guests have been - especially after parties.

DON'T SMOKE:

In attics, closets ,or other confined spaces. Near hanging clothing, drapes, materials. Near stored paper, chemicals, rubbish. Near flammable liquids of all kinds. In the engine compartments of boats or cars.
