NFA responds to fires and bus accident

 

National Fire Authority (NFA) attended to three separate house fire incidents from last night.

At Kikau Street in Samabula, Suva today a wooden four flat house was destroyed in a fire.

 At 1059hrs, NFA Suva Fire Station responded to the fire call and upon arrival at 1103hrs, the fire team saw the house fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters used deliveries of water from four fire trucks with the use of a nearby fire hydrant to extinguish the fire.

NFA investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

In Tavua, quick action by the NFA Tavua fire team last night averted a major fire incident at Ralulu Street in Tavua town.

At 2211hrs, NFA Tavua firefighters responded to a fire call at Ralulu Street in Tavua and upon arrival at 2213hrs , the fire team saw smoke coming out from one of the bedroom.

Fire team entered the house after gaining entry from the front door and saw a bedroom on fire and a mother and her daughter trapped inside the burning bedroom.

Firefighters rescued the mother and the daughter and were able to quickly extinguish the fire with delivery of water from its fire truck.

The mother and daughter were immediately conveyed to the Tavua Hospital before being transferred to the Lautoka hospital.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire in the bedroom and prevented the fire from spreading to other two bedrooms and three nearby houses in this area.

NFA investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

In Navakai settlement in Nadi last night, the NFA Nadi fire team saved a three bedroom corrugated iron and timber structured house.

At 2329hrs, NFA Nadi received the fire emergency call and immediately responded to the fire call. Upon arrival at 2336hrs, firefighters saw the rear side of the house on fire. The Fire team used deliveries of water from the fire truck to contain the fire in the area of origin and stopped the fire from spreading to the house.

Only the rear side of the house sustained fire damaged.

NFA investigations are underway to determine.

Meanwhile NFA also responded to a bus accident at Kalabu this morning. At 0754hrs NFA Valelevu received the road accident rescue call and upon arrival at 0757hrs, the rescue team saw a bus that had crashed into a side and passengers trapped inside.

Firefighters assisted the students in the bus and conveyed them to the CWM hospital in the NFA, Ministry of Health and St John Ambulance vehicles.

NFA CEO John O’Connor is reminding members of the community on the importance of fire safety all the time.

“Fire is one of the most dangerous disaster which can happen at our home and in our properties and it is very important that all members of the community and family members take extra care to avoid a fire from happening at home and properties.

Mr O’Connor is reminding home owners to always ensure to properly check their houses before leaving their house to work or going out especially when there is no one at home and before going to bed as this will enable them to identify or put out any potential fire hazard in time before it catches a fire.

Established by virtue of the National Fire Service Act, 1994 the National Fire Authority assumed responsibilities to provide fire services for the entire nation of Fiji in February 1995.
