Fire destroys Ba home

Eleven members of a family in Yalalevu, Ba are now homeless after a fire which started as a result of children playing with matches completely destroyed the four bedroom corrugated iron and wooden structured house.

NFA Ba received the fire emergency call at 1455hrs and immediately responded to the fire emergency call. Upon arrival at 1458hrs, the fire team saw the house fully engulfed with flames.

Firefighters fought hard to extinguish the fire and stop it from spreading to the nearby three houses in this area.

NFA CEO John O’Connor is again emphasizing the need for parents and guardians to supervise their children all the time at home and should always be aware of their children’s whereabouts.

“We are fortunate and we are thankful to God that in this fire incident there was no serious injuries faced by the family members and their children who were at home at the time of this fire incident. However this house fire incident is again a serious remainder to parents and guardians and likewise to all home owners to ensure the safety of their children and family members at home,” Mr O’Connor said.

“This house fire incident now brings the total number of property fire incidents so far this year to twenty-nine and is the eighth house fire incident for the month of March 2013.

“Our advice to all parents and home owners is to ensure that they keep matches and lighters and likewise all fire ignition sources in a safe place and stored property in the house so that younger children at home are not able to get hold of these fire ignition sources which can be easily ignited,” Mr O’Connor said.

Meanwhile the NFA CEO has also highlighted NFA’s commitment to assist all families on fire prevention.

“NFA is continuing with its fire safety awareness in all the stations and members of the community are advised to contact any NFA Fire Stations Fiji wide to seek fire safety consultation for their families,” Mr O’Connor added.
