HOUSE FIRE CLAIMS LIFE

National Fire Authority (NFA) attended to a fire emergency call at Filipai Crescent, Tacirua East yesterday afternoon that claimed the life of a 32-year old woman.

A call was received by NFA Suva Control at 3.56 pm from Totogo Police station and the Suva Fire crew responded immediately. Upon arrival at the scene, the fire crew had to cut through an electronic gate to enter the premises and put out the fire.

The three-bedroom concrete house was fully engulfed when the fire crew arrived at the scene. The fire crew managed to control the fire and stop its spread to other adjacent buildings which were a few meters apart. However, it was very unfortunate that the body of a woman was found in the sitting room, believed to be the home owner’s wife.  The husband of the deceased was at work when the incident took place.

NFA is very saddened by the loss of life in the fire and greatly sympathizes with the family.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Mr. Puamau Sowane said this pandemic has affected many people and businesses. “I urge everyone to be alert and vigilant and to take fire safety seriously.”

“If you are home during this lockdown period, please check your homes and ensure to practice good fire safety measures in your home with your family,” he said.

“Our focus now is to assist the Health Ministry to fight this deadly virus and contain it as quickly as possible and during this time we all have to be more vigilant.”

NFA urges the public to call on the toll-free fire emergency number 910 if they see any property on fire so that the firefighters can respond in the quickest time to save that property.

NFA is working with the Police to conduct its investigations to determine the cause of the fire and circumstances surrounding the fire victim.
